OSHA requires employers to provide work and a workplace free from recognized hazards that could cause serious injury or death. Sanders (sometimes called grinders, especially when using them on metal) have moving belts and rotating discs that could snag, cut, dismember, and entrap, causing serious injury. Shields or other safeguards must be used to protect individuals. In addition, tables must be within 1/8" of the belt and disc to help prevent fingers and workpieces from being caught between the moving abrasive and the table.
This sander safety scale can verify that the openings between the belt and disc and the tables are 1/8" or less. The bronze-colored scale is made out of durable, 0.090"-thick anodized aluminum and has easy-to-read text and graphics that will not rub or scratch off. It is about the size of a credit card, which makes it convenient to carry and store. There is a 0.25"-diameter hole in it for attachment to sanders and a ruler along the back edge to measure openings for compliance.
